Understand the Bible? Pastor Melissa Scott, Ph.D.

Oct 23, 2020

The word "baptism" is a Greek word (from "bapto") that indicates a dipping into. It is used in four ways in the New Testament: the baptism of John the Baptist, the baptism of Christ's suffering, the baptism of believers, and the baptism in the Holy Spirit. John's baptism unto repentance and confession represented a bridge between the old way of the Law and the prophets and the new way of the Gospel. Jesus instructs his followers to make disciples, baptizing them and then continuing to teach them. The pattern in the New Testament is the hearing of the Gospel followed by baptism.  VF-2102
